By steering the kart toward virtual item blocks, you can collect koopa shells that you can then throw at enemies. You can’t really race a kart that has to go at a fixed pace down a rail, but you can turn it into a shooting gallery. The visor tracks your head, so you can look around and see all of the obstacles and racers, both physical and virtual, interact with each other.īowser’s Challenge takes what could easily be a simple, passive ride and supercharges it into a real-life gaming experience. Goombas and cheep cheeps jump in front of you as you steer, while the kart actively spins as you (and the other riders) twist the steering wheel. The visor shows more active, animated graphics than the ride’s own physical decorations provide, letting familiar racers like Mario, Peach, and the Koopalings drive around you. The AR video adds a special game-like element that brings it all together. That experience alone makes the ride comparable with Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or The Simpsons Ride (both also at Universal Studios). The kart whips around as it travels down the winding rail while lights flash, obstacles pop out, and wind blows in your face. Without the AR visor, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is an eye-catching indoor ride filled with just as many detailed decorations as the line leading up to it. Get in, get ready, and you're off the the races. Each rider also has access to a steering wheel that features thumb triggers and a tap point to register your score to your Power-Up Band if you have one. Each seat has an augmented reality (AR) visor that snaps onto the headband and projects a bright, colorful image in front of your eyes. The screens in Bowser’s factory deserve particular mention they’re lenticular, and give a Nintendo 3DS-like inspiration of glasses-free 3D that make the bob-ombs and mecha-koopas on the conveyor belts look like 3D objects.įor the ride itself, you have to put on a headband with Mario’s hat on the front, and hop into one of the four-seat karts. The game-themed decorations look amazing, with plenty of detail both in their artwork and sculpting. The line winds past Mario Kart trophies work tables filled with plans for bob-ombs, bullet bills, and mecha-koopas a full factory where those weapons are assembled and finally a Mario Kart TV production studio before you enter the ride. Then, finally, you enter Bowser’s Castle. You have to navigate a Yoshi’s Island-themed room that features smiling flowers, hanging berries, and Yoshis running between different screens on the walls. The entire line leading up to the ride is a winding path that takes you through a dark cave with paintbrush-like whorls reminiscent of the Vincent Van Gough-inspired Painted Swampland stage in New Super Mario Bros. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is a Mario Kart-themed augmented reality ride, though it’s a visual feast well before you put on the visor. Power-Up Bands are the big technological gimmick of Super Nintendo World. Shadow Showdown attraction, which you need to unlock by collecting keys in the park using your optional Power-Up Band. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is the only actual ride in Super Nintendo World, though there’s also the Toadstool Cafe restaurant and the 1-Up Factory gift shop. While Peach’s castle serves as the entrance to Super Nintendo World, Bowser’s is home to the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride, which is a spectacle unto itself. games’ first levels, floating (or at least wall-mounted) question mark blocks, huge piranha plants, and Bowser’s castle looming in the distance. The entire Nintendo-themed zone is filled with familiar sights, including the flat green-and-brown hills of the New Super Mario Bros.
